If your desk is a disaster zone, you’re in good company. Albert Einstein defended his notoriously messy desk, remarking, “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, then what are we to think of an empty desk?” Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, and Mark Twain are also known for their less-than-tidy workspace.

Does this mean you should high-five your messy tendencies? Maybe. A few questions to consider before you add another folder or post it note to the stacks of paper, knickknacks, and trash already on your desk.

Is your messiness significantly impacting your productivity?

Is your messiness significantly impacting your quality of work?

Is your messiness significantly impacting your quality of life?

If you’ve answered yes to these questions, it may be time to make some changes, especially if it’s affecting your business.
